Abstract

This thesis presents the properties of an aqueous solution of ciprofloxacin adsorbed in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and in porous matrices. (SBA15 i MCM41). The influence of the size of nanotubes and their structure on interactions with an aqueous solution of the drug was investigated. The characterization of the ciprofloxacin-carbon nanotube system allows for studying its effects on E. coli bacteria. In small nanometer-sized pores, due to the strong influence of surface forces and the reduced dimensionality of the system, the behavior of the system is different from the macroscopic scale. Ciprofloxacin adsorbed in carbon nanotubes has a longer-term effect, and the decreased bacterial adhesion leads to an increase in antibacterial activity. The antibiotic adsorbed in carbon nanotubes affects E. Coli, as SWCNTs detach biofilm-forming bacteria, allowing the antibiotic to kill bacteria more effectively. When microbes are treated with ciprofloxacin confined in nanotubes, the process of cell wall destruction is prolonged, and the single-walled carbon nanotubes agglomerate around the bacteria.
