Abstract

Building large ships is one of the basic trends in the world shipbuilding industry and Polish shipbuilding industry must link in the general current. However, the carrying out of the projects entails heavy investments to build up maritime infrastructure, to dredge canals, far waters, ports and harbour basins and to build dry docks. The author of this paper presents a method of investigating economic effectiveness of a dry dock. He states that the present instructions covering this field are maladjusted to such an Object as a dry dock. He puts forward his own method in which he takes into account productive capacities of a shipyard as a whole and the length of production cycles for vessels built in a dry dock. Having made the analysis he is able to point out the reasons for the underutilization of a dry dock and the possibilities of improving the results.
