Abstract
*The paper contains a description of an analysis of the most common investment strategies implemented by hedge funds. It covers two time horizons: a long time period – from the beginning of 1994 to February 2009, and a short time period, i.e. the time of the bear market being a reflection of the world financial crisis – from June 2007 to February 2009. The test results do not confirm the popular thesis that hedge funds are capable of achieving a positive rate of return, higher than the risk-free investment, regardless of the situation on the equity markets. This was only possible for two out of fourteen analysed strategies: Global Macro and Managed Futures. However, the overall assessment of the hedge fund industry is positive – each strategy performed better than the stock market during the financial crisis and the value of assets under management was much less volatile.
