Abstract

There are various images of the Mother of God in Laza Kostić poetry. In the study Ilijada. Pogled na jednu lepu glavu Kostić describes the Holy Mother in negative terms. The cult of Virgin Mary is called an illness of the western civilization. In the poem Dužde se ženi famous Venetian church Santa Maria della Salute is described as built at the expense of suffering imposed on Slavic people, so the Mother of God is connected with the Venetian expansion. Negative views on Virgin Mary are also introduced in the drama Pera Segedinac through an ekphrasis of famous Raphael’s work Sistine Madonna. However, Kostić’s new attitude towards the Mother of God is presented in his last and the most famous poem Santa Maria della Salute. The lyrical subject of the poem begs for forgiveness and glorifies the beauty of the Venetian church. The chasm between Latin and Byzantine culture is overcame.
