Abstract
The goal of this paper is to present the impact of sounds on building the identity of a place. The main object of the research is sound in the landscape of Warmia and Mazury, region in Poland, and the way sounds heard in the environment define places. Identity of place is constituted by the site’s cultural heritage, its historical context, location of the place, as well as phonic and visual experiences. A special role in the sound perception depends on the singing of birds and silence. The article attempts to draw upon an interdisciplinary audio project which intended to create soundmap of Mazury region, and was aimed at exploring places through sounds by recording the current as well as recalling absent soundscapes of this land. Professional musicians, sound engineers, audio -experimenters and residents were involved in running the project.
