Abstract

The approach to the evolution of religions proposed in this book tries to overcome the weaknesses of socio-cultural evolutionism and selectionist sociology based on the homology of cultural and genetic transmission. It is an attempt to synthesize the Darwinian approach with Herbert Spencer’s systems theory and sociological ecology of organizations. This makes it possible to analyze the origin and evolution of particular religious organizations under the influence of social forces and also of the mechanisms for resisting these forces.
