Abstract
XI w.
The dissertation discusses the early medieval pottery remains that were recovered from the oldest occupation horizons at the Ducal stronghold (site no. 15, 15c), the first suburbium (site no 14) and the second suburbium (site no 5.). These sites form the stronghold complex on the Lech Mountain in Gniezno. The preliminary thesis, methods, and descriptive criteria, that are important for the chronological, cultural, and social interpretations, were presented. The results of the pottery analysis were presented from a chronological and cultural perspective. Three horizons were distinguished: the early Slav horizon, the tribal horizon, and the early Piast dynasty horizon. The pottery was characterized based on the comparative analysis, including the deposit processes and the significance of the stronghold complex on the Lech Mountain. The description showed the pottery amid the local, regional and western Slavic pottery production. It was proven that foreign elements, characteristic for the northern and southern cultural circles, must have had an influence on the development of Gniezno pottery from the 8th to the 1st half of the 11th century.
