Abstract

The paper focuses on the liquidity of the securities exchange market as a determinant of the development of the Warsaw Stock Exchange during 1996-2008. The main focus has been put on the liquidity ratio and the value of securities turnover at the Warsaw Stock Exchange that were analysed using a descriptive statistics method. The obtained results have been verified using the data from a model exchange i.e. the New York Stock Exchange and the Vienna Stock Exchange, the latter being most frequently compared to the Polish one. It has been found that despite the appreciation in the turnover value expressed as the dynamics of the phenomena, the Warsaw Stock Exchange is still at a developing stage. This finding is confirmed not only by the dispersion of that ratio, but also by the way in which the turnover liquidity ratio has been changing. The disproportion between capitalisation and the turnover ratio as well as the fluctuation in liquidity at the peak of the 2008 crisis is a further proof that the Warsaw Stock Exchange has not been yet fully fledged.
