Abstract

The paper discusses fundamental features and various examples of spirituality which are not associated with religious belief, i.e. the spirituality of unbelief. Unbelief is here understood as the lack of the belief in God and embraces such phenomena as atheism, agnosticisms and religious indifferentism. The article presents three different examples of the spirituality of unbelief: atheistic spirituality (André Comte-Sponville), natural spirituality (Jerome A. Stone), and spirituality for the sceptic (Robert C. Solomon). All these forms of spirituality have several common features such as the orientation towards the world of nature and other human beings rather than orientation towards God, the rejection of supernatural reality, the connection between spontaneous experience and reflective interpretation and being a part of a wider intellectual endeavour. It is argued that the spirituality of unbelief contains incoherence which results from the fact that it is not easy to disentangle spirituality from the traditional religious framework.
